Social Media in Different Countries

Choose a Spanish-speaking country and analyze the state of social media there, any major political movements or changes it has been used for there, and the reasons for it. Share your personal views about whether social media has benefited the country.

For information, visit social media sites and search for postings about your chosen country. Also, use research sources to read about social media in your country.

Create a simple infographic that depicts information about social media in your country of choice. You may also want to compare the data to the United States. Here are some tools you can use to create your infographic:

Social Media

Choose one or more social media you believe to be of value (such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or Instagram) and argue for the value of it. Share your own arguments for its educational, political, and/or social value, and give at least one specific example of its positive use. If you have good examples to show of your own personal use of a social media tool, link to it. 

Find and link to a good-quality article (blog posting, news media, journal) that also supports its use with good arguments, and summarize those arguments.

Also consider sharing problems with social media and how it can be used in a negative way.

Here are some sources you can use to find articles:

Include at least one graphic that symbolizes your social media, making sure that it is Creative Commons-licenses and properly credited.

La Llorona Posting Assignment

  • Briefly explain who La Llorona is and how she has become an allegorical figure
  • Identify one work from cinema, music, poetry, advertising, or other media in which La Llorona appears and explain how her role as an allegorical figure is developed in that example. Create a hyperlink to an online site showing or describing this work.
  • Comment on at least three classmates' blog postings.

Domestic Violence Posting Assignment

This assignment has four parts:

  1. Read about domestic violence and statistics on domestic violence in the United States and/or Latin America in reputable research sources. Write a short summary in your blog of what you learned.
  2. Prepare a PSA (Public Service Announcement) in Spanish, followed by English alerting people to domestic violence issues. For this PSA, use any software app you like on your phone, or you can use Vocaroo on any computer. Your announcement should include some key statistics you learned in step 1. Your announcement should be no more than about a minute. Make sure you write a script to read before you record. A good PSA includes a greeting, statistics (with the sources indicated), and call to action. Embed your PSA in your blog posting.
  3. Write a letter to the editor or to an advice column in Spanish from the point of view of either the girl or the father in "Las Medias Rojas" explaining what your situation is like and seeking assistance. Compose your letter in the a Google Doc. Here is a business letter format template. Make a copy of it to use for your letter. Link to the letter from your blog posting.
  4. Comment on at least three of your classmates' postings.

First blog posting assignments for 2014-2015

For your first assignment, you have two different postings to write:

Post #1:

The first posting can be on any topic you like. You might want to write about what you look forward to doing in class or with your blog this year. You could share a favorite summer experience, or .... You get to pick the topic. The only requirement is that your post must include two elements:
  • At least one Creative Commons-licensed image that has meaning within the context of what you are writing about, with an appropriate credit hyperlink. For example, here's an image I found and liked about blogging:

Post #2:

The second post will focus on the poetry you are reading in class:
  • Write about how gender issues affect you today and how they differ from the experiences of your older relatives and from the experiences of the two poets. 
  • Once you have drafted your post, save your draft, and visit, and paste what you have written in your posting into the Create box to create a word cloud that displays some of the issues you wrote about relative to gender. Note that the terms that appear more frequently are displayed in larger size in the word cloud. 
  • Did the word cloud show you anything interesting about your experiences with gender issues you hadn't noted before? Which terms were most prominent? Why? Add the word cloud to your post and share this reflection.

In addition, please write comments on at least three classmates' blogs for Posting 1 and three for posting 2 (a total of at least six comments). Remember that comments should always be positive, and offer meaningful content, such as a compliment, suggestion, or question.

Welcome to the class blog for Ms. Rossell's AP Spanish Literature/Language class. I am Mrs. Lofton, the Mira Costa High School Teacher Librarian, and I am delighted to be participating in the class blogging project with you. I started blogging about seven years ago, and I have found both writing my own blogs and reading other people's to be very rewarding and informative.
